Content strategy: Give Something Back to Berlin

Give Something Back to Berlin is a volunteer platform for Berlin's newcomers. I was the founding editor of its online magazine which provided a home for the city’s migrants to share their perspectives and a strong counter-narrative to anti-immigrant discourse.

A personal highlight: When 18-year-old Laya from Syria wrote us an article about her love of metal music, international metal magazine Revolver republished her story and added illustrations by a popular DC Comics artist. Laya’s highlight? When her favourite band shared her story with their millions of Facebook fans.

In 2016 GSBTB won the inaugural UNAOC Intercultural Innovation Award and was shortlisted for Prix Ars Electronica’s Digital Communities Award.

Content marketing and branding: Steady

Independent media makers use Steady to publish their work and earn a reliable income via memberships.

I interviewed a series of trailblazing media makers about running their own mini media empires and the important work they do to fill glaring representation gaps in mainstream media.

When Steady launched a newsletter product, I wrote a series of articles about newsletters 2.0, why they’re the next big media trend and how to get the most out of the medium. This coincided with a website rebrand, where I took charge of the English content. I also produced an English-language style guide.

Editorial direction: Eed Be Eed newspaper

Eed Be Eed is a monthly newspaper founded by Syrian journalists living in Germany.

As Communications Manager at Give Something Back to Berlin, I led our side of a collaboration with the newspaper to produce a special edition focused on migration and mental health.

The stories ranged from personal accounts to professional psychological guidance and were published in Arabic, German and English, weaving a range of cultural perspectives.

10,000 copies were distributed around Berlin and Brandenburg, mainly to refugee camps where mental health support is sorely lacking.

Branded content: Babbel

Babbel is a language learning app based in Berlin.

For its online magazine, I wrote a series of articles on the peculiarities of New Zealand English and the Kiwi accent, in line with Babbel’s affable tone of voice.

Editorial services: Slow Travel Berlin

Slow Travel Berlin is an English-language blog that takes the long-view on the German capital.

To celebrate its fifth anniversary, I teamed up with the site’s founder to edit and publish a coffee table book featuring the blog’s best stories.

Advertorial content: Freie Universität Berlin

The Center for Global Politics was a political institute at Freie Universität Berlin.

I produced advertorial content for the institute, featured in Foreign Affairs Magazine.
